It Takes a Village

It Takes a Village to create meaningful change.

There is an overrepresentation of Black children in the foster care system. Once they are in the system, Black children often face unfair barriers to permanency. Arms Wide Adoption Services strives to disrupt unjust outcomes for children in foster care through two key initiatives.

  1. We will find quality families to parent Black children in foster care by fostering or adopting.
  2. We will create a community to educate the public about the need for foster and adoptive families for Black children. Together, we can improve outcomes for Black children in our community.

Join our village to help us change the outcomes for Black children in child welfare.

Become a Foster or Adoptive Parent

Black children are in the foster care system at a rate of twice that of their peers. They face unfair barriers to permanency, and as a result, experience more negative outcomes than other children. We are looking for families who are interested in fostering or adopting Black children so that we can help change these outcomes. If you want to learn about foster care or adoption, please join us for one of our Information Meetings, where we will walk you through the foster care and adoption process.

Families living in the following areas and counties are eligible for kinship, foster care, and adoption services through Arms Wide:

GREATER HOUSTON AREA: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Walker, Waller, or Wharton County

SOUTH TEXAS AREA:  Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Cameron, Duval, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Live Oak, McMullen, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Starr, Webb, Willacy, or Zapata County

Join Our Village

Join our community that is committed to disrupting unjust outcomes for Black children in foster care. Whether you are a foster parent, a community leader, a church, or a community organization, we welcome you to our village!

One way to join our village is by participating on our It Takes a Village Advisory Committee. The goal of this committee is to engage with members of the community to help share the message of the needs of children in care.  We will ask members to help connect us to their community through setting up speaking events, engaging with groups that can help meet the needs of families and assisting us in bringing in more families with an interest in addressing disproportionality by becoming a foster/adoptive parent.

If you are interested in joining the Advisory Committee or one of the other ways to get involved, complete this form. You may also email Ashley Sims at asims@armswide.org for more details.
